Fourth year pre-service teacher mentors: A firsthand guide to reducing stress in first year teaching students
This project utilises ‘experienced’ fourth year education students to provide feedback to first year students about how they managed their academic and practicum requirements.
Chief Investigator: Dr Gretchen Geng
Duration: 2014 - 2016
Funder: CDU Retention Project
Dr Gretchen Geng is leading a CDU funded Student Retention Project that seeks to reduce stress for first year education students and enhance their capacity to cope with the demands of their course. A key element of teacher education courses is the professional learning experience component where students undertake practical experience in a school. This project utilises ‘experienced’ fourth year education students to provide feedback to first year students about how they managed their academic and practicum requirements to cope with the stresses of their first experiences of teaching in a classroom. Expected benefits of the study are improved retention rates, increased course completions, and development of mentoring skills within the fourth year education student group aimed at enhancing their capability as teachers.
